Design and Technology at St Mary's

Intent

At St Mary's, we believe that high-quality Design & Technology education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent, and reflect when creating their own work. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of Design & Technology. They should also know how these both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Implementation

The skills and knowledge that children will develop throughout each Design & Technology topic are mapped across each year group and throughout the school to ensure progression. At St Mary's we use the Kapow scheme of work.

Impact

The emphasis on knowledge and skills ensures that children understand the context of the work, as well as the designers that they are learning about and being inspired by. This approach enables links to form, deepening understanding in other curriculum areas as well as developing mastery in the key processes of design and technology.
